Biography

I was born in Los Angeles, grew up in New York and Montreal, and have lived mostly in Toronto ever since. For many years I worked as an exhibit planner for Parks Canada, and subsequently as a journalist and writer, publishing feature articles in many of Canada's national newspapers and magazines. I also provided freelance speechwriting and editorial services to a great variety of clients (a better way to stay solvent than freelance journalism).

My fascination with visual art must have started with the hours my mother spent pushing my stroller around various museums and galleries. And her provision of free access to fingerpaint and crayons in unfettered, glorious messiness surely led to my habitual dabbling at drawing and painting. But she firmly quashed my high school notion of going to art school. Art is no way to make a living! No doubt I would now be living in a bus shelter if I hadn't heeded her advice and earned a couple of degrees in History from McGill University and the University of Toronto. I hasten to add that I also love that subject.

I finally took the full immersion plunge into building my own art practice in 2003, when I started three years of studio training at the Art Centre at Central Technical School, followed by another year of study at the Toronto School of Art.

Since then my work has emphasized painting, printmaking and collage. I work mostly at my studio and also at Toronto's artist-run printmaking centre, Open Studio.
